Analysis 1 – Road Rage Road Rage has become a widespread hazard on the nation’s congested, fast-paced roads, especially on highways. In fact, Road Rage is a serious national problem. Do you curse and honk your horn if a driver tries to cut you off, or slam on your brakes to annoy someone who’s tailgating? Aggressive driving, better known as â€Å"Road Rage†, occurs when furious motorists lose their temper over traffic disturbances. Almost every day you hear of another incident involving an aggressive driver. Speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, following too closely, yelling and gesturing are actions that characterize the aggressive driver. Psychologists believe that anger is the root of Road Rage. They describe†¦show more content†¦A group named the â€Å"Citizens Against Speeding and Aggressive Driving† (CASAD) formed in February 1997 in response to the many dangerous driving incidents in the Washington, D.C. region. The groupâ⠂¬â„¢s goals are to slow traffic down, reduce aggressive driving and increase safety on the roads. No specific action has been taken with the Federal government to require states to take action against aggressive driving. The legislatures have, however, begun to examine ways to deal with dangerous drivers. Some states including Illinois have passed bills addressing these issues. In Illinois, any person who intentionally drives a vehicle in such a manner as to endanger the safety or property of another creates the offense of Road Rage. It is a class A misdemeanor. Aggravated Road Rage occurs when the violation results in great bodily harm or disfigurement to another and is a class 4 felony. Road rage violations result in mandatory driver’s license revocation. Also, it creates the offense of aggressive driving when a person operates a vehicle carelessly in disregard for the rights of others, in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger any property or person, or comm itting three or more traffic offenses. Aggressive driving is a class B misdemeanor and a second offense is a class A misdemeanor. The bill was passed on March 27, 1998. Drivers have come to accept Road Rage as the norm.
